2018 interns

MaineHealth provides terrific internship opportunities for students to gain valuable insight and hands-on experience within Maine's largest healthcare system. We take pride in the high-quality work that our summer interns produce and pay a competitive hourly rate.

Interns are paired with a MaineHealth employee who will be their preceptor and mentor for the summer. The preceptor will assign tasks and projects to the student. In addition to working closely with their preceptor, the interns will attend several virtual earning & professional development sessions throughout the summer, including discussions with MaineHealth senior leaders, informative presentations about how to write effective resumes and cover letters, and mock-interview sessions to practice answering behavior-based interview questions. At the end of the internship program, each intern will have the opportunity to present a summary of the work they accomplished throughout the summer.

  • Applications: The timeline to apply for this internship program is February – March. Roles will be filled on an ongoing basis as candidates are selected– if you’re interested in applying for a role that is listed, please do so as soon as possible.
  • Interviews: Preceptors conduct interviews and select their intern(s) February – April. *Interviews will be completed virtually via Skype, Zoom, etc. Please note the above regarding applications.
  • Hiring & Onboarding: Students complete the hiring and onboarding process April – May.
  • Orientation: A mandatory virtual intern orientation takes place on June 7th.
  • Internship: Interns work and learn 20-40 hours per week with their preceptor June 7th – August 13th
  • Final presentation: All interns are required to present a summary of their internship at the end of the summer.


To be considered for a MaineHealth internship position, students must be in good academic standing and currently enrolled (full-time or part-time) at an accredited educational institution (college, university, graduate school, medical school, etc.). Non-Clinical Intern Program Positions – Summer 2021

  • Students will be placed at our non-clinical positions throughout the MaineHealth system, including our corporate office in Portland, Maine.

MaineHealth Integrated Quality and Safety - Performance Improvement & System Engineering

Performance Improvement intern - The intern in this role will assist with numerous Quality & Safety projects and tasks on the MaineHealth OpEx team. Our ideal candidate will have a passion for quality and process improvement work. Student with good data analysis skills - quantitative and qualitative - preferred. This intern will be based in Portland, ME

Systems Engineering intern - This intern role is based within the Management Engineering team at the MaineHealth Department of Performance Improvement, and offers the opportunity to learn about the project management and process improvement tools (e.g. developing charters and timelines, process mapping, root cause analysis, statistical analysis using excel or R etc.) The intern in this role will gain exposure to healthcare operations through direct observations and Operational Excellence. The intern will be tasked with coming up with innovative solutions to problems related to capacity and patient flow at Maine Medical Center using what they have learned and with support from their mentors in the department. We are seeking an undergraduate student in Industrial Engineering or equivalent program, or other candidates with an interest in in data science and familiarity with basic statistical concepts and knowledge of Excel, R or other statistical programs. This role will be located in Portland, ME 

MaineHealth (Maine Medical Center/Maine Medical Partners) Quality and Safety - Performance Improvement

This intern will work on numerous projects, with daily tasks including joining Zoom calls for projects, researching best practices, preparing reports, analyzing data in Excel, and more. Our ideal candidate will have the ability to research best practices, prepare written and oral/PowerPoint reports, conduct interviews, and collect/analyze/interpret data in Excel. The ideal candidate will be interested in quality improvement and will be excited to learn!

MaineHealth (Maine Medical Center) Quality and Safety - Operational Excellence

The Maine Medical Center-based Operational Excellence interns will work on a project to support large system healthcare improvement initiatives. In addition, the interns will support COVID-safe Operational Excellence by participating in and facilitating virtual Huddles and Gemba Walks. Lastly, the interns will develop skills in working with and coaching interprofessional healthcare teams. We are seeking interns who are self-directed, and students currently enrolled in a Master's level or professional program preferred.

Maine Medical Center Library & Knowledge Services

The intern in this position will assist with database maintenance, faculty profiles, the archival material scan and process, and additional projects. The ideal candidate will have library science/information science experience.

Memorial Hospital Healthcare Administration

This intern will have the exciting opportunity to assist with long-range facility planning and with our orthopedic construction project. This intern will also assist with using Truvant data, and with operationalizing SME from our Women’s Health service line. A student with a healthcare administration major and/or experience desired.

Located in North Conway, NH

Maine Behavioral Healthcare Administration

The intern in this role will get to work closely with the President of MBH on special projects that advance the strategic plan of the organization. The intern will attend various meetings with the President to gain experience related to healthcare leadership. We are seeking a self-starter who is willing to take initiative. This intern should have the ability to work on special projects with guidance but independently. Excel and PowerPoint skill desired.

Southern Maine Health Care Provider Services Practice Administration

These interns will assist with the following projects: ambulatory patient flow process improvement, daily and monthly dashboard data collection and analysis, coordinating updates to existing business plans, and other projects throughout Provider Services. We are seeking undergraduate interns with an interest in healthcare administration and/or graduate-level students who are MHA/MBA/MPH candidates.

These interns will be located in Biddeford, ME

Physician Revenue Integrity

These intern will assist with running reports in EPIC and working on spreadsheets to identify areas the physician practices need to assist the physician revenue integrity team. Additionally, this individual will learn to perform charge corrections in the EPIC system and work WQ's in the EPIC system. Computer skills, problem-solving skills, team player, communication skills, and experience with Excel are a plus.

This intern will be based out of Sanford, ME

Stephens Memorial Hospital Operations

This intern role will focus on the development of our program for the long-term facilities maintenance of Western Maine Health. This project will incorporate both the facilities master plan and ongoing preventative maintenance. This intern will also assist with our new food pantry initiative and the set-up of this program. Our ideal candidate will have data management skills, software skills, organization and flexibility.

This intern will be located in Norway, ME

Maine Medical Center Patient Care Support Services

These intern roles will focus on leadership with key projects and learning areas including department management, department operations, HR management, financial management and reporting, and the clinical impact of department operations. Our ideal candidates will be interested in hospitality, healthcare administration and/or business management.

Our intern group will rotate through the Patient Care Support Services Division areas including Environmental Services, Security, Food Services, Linen, and Clinical Equipment.

HR Compensation

Some projects this role will work on include: pay practice documentation and reporting, recognition program reporting, job title methodology mapping, among other tasks. Our ideal candidate will have Excel experience, strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

HR Talent - Workforce Development, Recruitment Marketing, & Recruitment

This intern in this role will have the exciting opportunity to work with multiple teams within the larger MaineHealth Talent department, including Recruitment Marketing, Workforce Development, and Recruitment. Projects will include: assisting with the development of clinical and non-clinical candidate pipelines for current and future position needs, importing pipelines into the Candidate Relationship Manager (CRM) tool, auditing and updating current college and university program contact lists, and providing them marketing materials that highlight MaineHealth system and opportunities, partnering with Talent Marketing Specialist on social media initiatives, creating content library based on relevant healthcare topics for CRM outreach and social media platforms, assisting with youth, community, and employee workforce development program planning initiatives, and additional tasks as assigned.

Our ideal candidate will be pursuing a degree in and/or have a demonstrated interest in Marketing/Communications, English, Business, and/or Human Resources. Strong attention to detail, communications, organization, and computer skills desired, as well as comfort and proficiency with social media platforms.

MaineHealth Care at Home Finance

The intern in this role will work to assist with our complete budget including budget analysis and flow through committee approval as well as other financial projects to support operations. We are seeking an Accounting/Finance major with strong computer skills, particularly Excel.

This role will be based at our Saco, ME location.

Maine Medical Center Patient Experience

The patient experience summer intern will be involved in a myriad of projects. This intern will be part of our COVID-19vaccination efforts and will spend allotted time at one of our clinics in an administrative role. The intern will also engage in customer service tasks, which may include reviewing patient experience survey results and will be involved in improvement initiatives at MMC and MaineHealth. Our ideal candidate will have strong customer service skills.

Southern Maine Health Care Quality

The intern in this role will primarily focus on numerous exciting projects including: patient experience analysis with a template that can be updated monthly or quarterly, safety event reporting, metrics and small improvement project support aligned to AIP goals and strategy deployment, support of COVID-safe practices tracer activity, tracking, and analysis, and will also support Operational Excellence remobilization. We are seeking a student who is proficient in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint, comfortable working with data and performing data analysis, has experience/awareness of improvement methodology and healthcare quality management.

MaineHealth Legal Affairs

The Legal Affairs intern will focus on legal research and drafting memos, assisting with client requests for help, attending client meetings, assisting with investigations, document review, policy revision and other tasks as assigned.

This role will be based in Portland, ME

Maine Medical Partners Administration/Operations

The intern in this role will gain fantastic healthcare administration/operations experience through their work this summer focusing on projects related to COVID response centers and a large medical office building move. A student pursuing a degree in Healthcare Management/Policy with Excel and database skills strongly preferred.

This role will be based in South Portland, ME

MaineHealth Strategic Planning

The Strategic Planning intern will be asked to collaborate with planning leadership and analytics team members to conduct a strategic planning project for a local health system. The intern will analyze statewide discharge data, and other internal hospital data, as a necessary step within the planning process. The intern may also carry out a needs assessment, and conduct stakeholder interviews or surveys to gain context and insight for their project.

The intern will have the opportunity to work with a variety of clinical professionals and may be asked to assist with communication efforts. The intern will be expected to gather results, conduct data analysis and provide a presentation of their final project to Planning team members. Our ideal candidate will have Office Suite experience (especially Excel), R studio, SAS, SPSS, SQL and any other data management programs/statistical language, as well as any course(s) taken in data analysis, statistics, or project management/planning.

Integrated Clinical Services - Pediatrics

This intern will assist with a variety of projects, which may include: Designing one-page summaries of each MaineHealth local health system in terms of their pediatric patient data, birthrates, and other key public health statistics, creating a better platform to showcase pediatric clinical educational sessions - for registration and to display video content after the sessions. This intern will also assist in brainstorming with the department on ideas for integrating diversity, equity and inclusion work into all of our pediatric initiatives.

Our ideal candidate will have a demonstrated interest in children, children's health, pediatrics, family medicine, neonatology, health equity and/or public health. Ideally would be comfortable pulling together information from disparate sources and have a creative eye for how to summarize information into concise, well-formatted documents/web pages. Comfort learning new platforms is a plus.

Marketing & Communications

This intern will have the exciting opportunity to gain exposure and experience within our Corporate Marketing department. Projects and tasks this intern will assist with may include: copywriting for social media and website updates, digital signage, and platform-related research among other work. Our ideal candidate will have experience with copywriting, marketing/communications work, experience navigating social media, strong organization, the ability to work as a team and independently, and project management skills are a plus.

Information Technology Communications

The intern in this role will have the unique opportunity to assist our Information Services department with communications projects, with tasks including: composing articles for the monthly IT newsletters, updating branding materials, joining the onboarding committee to give insight as a new hire, updating the department’s SharePoint site, interviewing leadership for written work, and more. We are seeking a student pursuing a degree in English or Communications, or related major.

MaineHealth Corporate Services/IS ERP Systems

ERP Systems owns and supports 90 production applications that span a range of technologies and business areas. Some are cloud-based and others on-premise. This intern’s specific assignments will be based on the selected intern's skills, experience and interests. Day to day work opportunities will be vast and will include day-to-day support, small enhancements and exposure to large projects. We are seeking someone who is naturally curious, loves to learn, has strong initiative, is not afraid to ask questions and is energized by a fast-paced environment. A student studying computer science with interest/experience in the management of information systems preferred.

This intern will be located in Westbrook, ME

IT - Field Services

Maine Medical Center/Portland Location:
This intern will gain ample hands-on IT field services experience with the following projects: assisting with IT Moves, Installs, troubleshooting PCs, laptops, PDA's, as well as working with the staff on the hot pager to learn the day-to-day of healthcare IT operations. Our ideal candidate will be studying/ have experience in the IT field, but we are willing to offer training to the right candidate. (40 hours/week) This intern will be located in Portland, ME

Westbrook Location:
The intern in this role will work primarily with our teams at our 1 Riverfront Plaza location in Westbrook. This intern will assist with break/fix troubleshooting, resolutions and customer service. Our ideal candidate will have strong analytical thinking skills and customer service experience. (40 hours/week)

IT Informatics

The IT Informatics intern will have the opportunity to assist the department with various informatics optimization projects. We are seeking a student with an interest in informatics, electronic health records, and/or data and analytics.

Information Security Engineering/Cyber Security

The MaineHealth Information Security team is looking for an intern for the summer to work alongside our security engineering team. Responsibilities may include one or more of the following activities: support security event monitoring with members of the Information Security Engineering team, assist with research and analysis activity for known or emerging threats, assist the security engineering team in supporting any identified security incidents, work with Security engineering team to assist with security testing and validation process across a spectrum of technologies.

We’re looking for computer science and/or information technology degree students with a demonstrated focus/interest in Information/Cyber Security. Open to 3rd and 4th year students. Knowledge of one or more core technologies, such as MS Windows Administration, network controls technology or Unix based controls preferred. Strong organizational, analytical and communications skills are important assets for a successful candidate. Interns will be expected to work with several team members covering different aspects of IT risk/systems security and will report to the team’s Senior Manager.

IT Provider Systems

The intern in this role will work on MyChart error queues, assisting patients with MyChart sign up and issues, and matching incoming patient documents into EPIC, among other tasks. We are seeking a student with advanced computer skills, organization skills, customer service skills, and critical thinking skills.

Supply Chain

Role 1: The intern in this role will work with the MaineHealth Supply Chain contracting and sourcing team on special projects related to how we buy supplies, services, and equipment. Our ideal candidate will be pursuing a degree in logistics, business, communications, or medicine/nursing with an interest in business.

Role 2: The intern in this role will spend time working with and learning from our leaders in contracting, procurement, informatics, value analysis and logistics. Our ideal candidate will be pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in operations management, supply chain management, engineering, logistics, or healthcare administration. (40 hours per week)

Center for Health Improvement

The intern in this role will have the exciting opportunity to assist with multiple projects, including supporting the 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment, helping to organize community forums, sharing data and materials, communication with regional liaisons, outreach to communities, and more. Our ideal candidate will have strong communication, organization, and computer skills, will be motivated and an independent worker, and we are seeking an undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a public health degree or with public health experience.

Cardiovascular Service Line

The interns in these roles will focus on one or more of the following projects during their summer internship: Congenital Heart Disease (restoration of endothelial integrity and clinical outcomes for pediatric cardiac surgery), Mitral Valve Center of Excellence project development and research, PC4 registry research to explore opportunities for clinical outcomes of cardiac pediatric critical care, and developing an analytic tool to reduce cost in Cardiovascular Care. We are seeking undergraduate or graduate-level students with a demonstrated interest in Cardiovascular Disease.
