Summary

The Peer Navigator has personally struggled with substance use and is in active recovery.  They have demonstrated resiliency and perseverance in their own wellness or recovery.  This role is a community-based peer support position working to provide support to individuals experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, or other vulnerable life circumstances who are also struggling with a substance use disorder. Support and assistance is offered by outreach and engagement in the community and onsite at partnering organizations.

As a Peer Navigator, you will:

  • Be willing and effective in communicating about your lived experience and recovery in a way that is beneficial to another person's recovery journey.
  • Establish healthy peer support relationships, infusing hope for a better future, and modeling acceptance with a focus on recovery.
  • Build relationships with individuals that reside at the local shelters, soup kitchens, community organizations, and on the streets.
  • Work in a team and partner with the community and agencies providing services for vulnerable individuals.
  • Conduct outreach and develop relationships at local food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, libraries, recovery centers, and other areas where the target population is congregating.
  • Provide varying services which may include outreach, education, and support groups, one-on-one peer support, securing basic needs, and helping individuals navigate services and recovery resources in the community.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  1. Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; some college preferred.
  2. License/Certifications: Completion of, or ability to complete, State of Maine Certified Intentional Peer Support Specialist (CIPSS) Certification required. Provisional CIPSS Certification required within 12 months of hire date. Ability to maintain certification (meet co-reflection and continuing education requirements.) Ability to provide support according to the values and principles of IPS is required.
  3. Experience: N/A
  4. Is receiving or has received services and/or supports related to substance use and is willing to self-identify on this basis with peers and in the community.
  5. Ability to articulate a recovery network of support and services in the community for self and others
  6. Completion of Recovery Coach training may also be necessary
  7. Models strengths-based interactions and treats all individuals with respect. Demonstrates ability to utilize strengths-based approach to problem solving
  8. Good communication skills and an ability to establish rapport with consumers, family members, caregivers and other resource providers. Willingness to further develop communication skills (i.e.. written, verbal, and computer.) Demonstrated ability to keep focus on continual learning and moving towards positive goals rather than away from what is not wanted
  9. Ability to work a flexible work schedule, including evenings and weekends
  10. Computer proficiency required with ability to demonstrate basic computer skills in using Microsoft Office and Outlook email is required
  11. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of volunteers, fellow workers, communities, resources and cultures. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively
  12. Demonstrated ability to keep focus on continual learning and growth is required
