The Registered Nurse – Research Patient Navigator is a member of the Clinical Trials team as part of the MaineHealth Institute for Research (MHIR). We are looking for an experienced research nurse to lead the rapid growth of our Oncology Clinical Trials portfolio. This role will spearhead the clinical operations implementation of new therapeutic trials within the Oncology Program, through the development of source documents, recruitment plans and study-related processes that align with established clinical pathways in the Program. This role will work closely with the research teams and clinical care teams prior to study activation, to communicate and provide training on trial requirements. The Research Patient Navigator will also be responsible for connecting patients to clinical research services within the organization, outside facilities, and within the community.

Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

• Education: Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing required. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required or must complete BSN within three years of start date.
• License/Certifications: Current applicable state(s) license as a Registered Professional Nurse required. Oncology certification or defined process for achieving certification required.
• Experience: Experience working with oncology patients and families preferred. Experience in community outreach preferred.

Responsibilities: 

• Provides appropriate and timely education to patients, families and caregivers to facilitate understanding and support shared decision making.
• Engages/participates in community events to educate the public on prevention/early detection.
• Assesses/screens patient needs upon initial encounter, matching unmet needs with appropriate services, referrals and support systems.
• Identifies barriers to care and facilitates referrals as appropriate.
• Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team to coordinate plan of care and follow up, including clinical trial and genetic counseling referral, if applicable.
• Monitors timely scheduling of appointments, diagnostic testing and procedures to be performed at the right time and right location, per protocol.
• Prepares for multidisciplinary tumor conference, attends conference and facilitates follow up, if applicable.
• Develops or uses appropriate assessment tools, i.e., distress tool.
• Ensures accurate and timely documentation in patient record.
• Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-based guidelines throughout the disease process, i.e., NCCN guidelines.
• Supports a smooth transition of patients from active treatment into survivorship or end-of-life care.
• Acts as a liaison between patients, families, caregivers and healthcare team. Advocates for patients and families to promote optimal care and outcomes.
• Improves the patient navigation process through self-evaluation, quality improvement and advancement of the profession.

This position is a hybrid role based at our Scarborough, ME research facility, with some opportunity for remote work.
