MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland (MHMMCP) is seeking a passionate, dedicated, and highly caring person for a full-time position as the Emergency Medicine Service Line Chaplain. This clinical position will provide the highest quality of spiritual care and support to the patients, families, and staff of MHMMCP, focusing on emergency and critical needs during the night shift. Maine Medical Center Portland, which is Northern New England’s only Level I Trauma hospital and part of the regional MaineHealth system, is a not-for-profit 700+ bed facility. This position reports to the Director of Spiritual Care at Maine Medical Center.
The Emergency Medicine Service Line Chaplain (SLC) serves as a primary provider of spiritual care services at MHMMCP, including inpatients and outpatients. This position provides spiritual care assessments and interventions; collaborates with interdisciplinary and medical care teams; consults with staff regarding spiritual/emotional care issues; participates in Service Line Council, task forces and committees as assigned; communicates with area clergy for coordination of care (with patient permission); and educates patients, families, staff and community members in matters related to spirituality. The SLC works collaboratively with other Spiritual Care staff to carry out responsibilities of the department and provides on call or back up coverage in rotation with other permanent staff members. This is a full-time position with competitive compensation and benefits. The person hired for this position will be required to work onsite at the hospital location and may not work remotely. The regular position hours are Monday through Friday evenings from 3pm-11pm.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)
1. Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s level Degree in Theology, or a Master’s Degree in Counseling or Divinity required. 1 unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) required. 4 units of CPE preferred.
2. License/Certifications: Currently licensed and/or ordained within a recognized faith community required. Board Certification by the APC, NACC, NAJC, CAPPE, or SCA preferred. Valid Driver’s License required.
3. Experience: Relevant experience in the provision of professional ministry or chaplaincy required. Experience working with patients/families dealing with life-threatening illness and death required.
